BKB 47: Paulie vs Goodjohn Results & Highlights

Paulie Malignaggi successfully returned to combat sports, winning a five-round split decision over Tyler Goodjohn in Leeds. The super welterweight bout headlined BKB 47: Pride and Punishment.

The 44-year-old Malignaggi turned back the clock, showing the speed and footwork that earned him two boxing world titles. Goodjohn showed the skill, conditioning and grit that made him a BKB legend and fan favourite.

At the end of five close rounds, two judges favoured Malignaggi by scores of 48-47. The dissenting judge scored the bout 48-47 for Goodjohn.

Paulie built an early lead with his quick jab and body shots, as Goodjohn kept a high guard and looked to counter with power punches. Paulie made Goodjohn miss by moving away.

Goodjohn had some success with lead left hooks, but it was a “Tornado” right hand that had Paulie in trouble in round four. Malignaggi was throwing with Goodjohn on the ropes when Goodjohn detonated a right hand and follow up shot that stunned Malignaggi.

Malignaggi weathered the storm and round five was quieter and closer. It was an impressive peformance by Malignaggi, who stunned the combat sports world when he announced he was coming back to fighting afer a few years layoff.

He later said he couldn’t see from his right eye after an accidental Goodjohn eye poke.

Malignaggi’s next move remains to be seen.

Goodjohn said before the fight that this would be his last match. Let’s hope “El Tornado” reconsiders. He’s still got a lot to give the sport of bare knuckle, and has nothing to be ashamed of after an excellent performance against Paulie.

Marko Martinjak def. Dan Podmore-KO Round 1

In what may have been the bare knuckle round of the year, Marko Martinjak rose from an early knockdown to blast out Podmore.

Podmore dropped Martinjak with a right hand seconds into the bout.

The blow may have woken up Martinjak, who pushed the referee away ready to resume battle.

Martinjak let his hands go, dropping Podmore.

The action resumed and Martinjak unloaded to score the knockout win.

Scott McHugh def Joe Fitzpatrick-KO Round 2

Leeds fan favourite Scott McHugh survived a scare to come back and stop Northern Ireland’s Joe Fitzpatrick.

McHugh started fast, pressuring Fitzpatrick and working the body.

Fitzpatrick, a southpaw, measured McHugh with his right before dropping him with a left uppercut.


McHugh recovered and landed a good shot at the close of round one.

In round two, McHugh connected with a short right that dropped Fitzpatrick.

A McHugh right to the body finished Fitzpatrick, dropping him to his knees to end the fight.

McHugh improved to 15-5 (7 KOs) with the win. Fitzpatrick slips to 3-4.

Alex Wilson def. Danny Worsfold-KO Round 1
Wilson improved to 4-2 with a dominant performance against the winless Worsfold (0-3).

Wilson’s body attack dropped Worsfold twice, with the overmatched Worsfold taking the count after the second knockdown.

Aaron McCallum def. Liam Howell-KO Round 1
Aaron McCallum (8-6) scored a quick stoppage over Liam Howell (4-3).

McCallum connected with a huge right in an exchange, dropping Howell to the canvas.

The game Howell tried to beat the count, with the referee waving the match off with Howell trying to steady himself with a hand on the canvas. Official time was 42 seconds of round one.

BKB veteran Reece Murray (7-4-1, 2 KOs) stopped Jack Dugdale (4-2) with a body shot.

In the opening bout of the main card, Ryan Gibbs defeated Chris Carroll.

BKB 47 Prelims Results

Victoria Albons Llompart def. Jamillette Valverde-TKO Round 4

The fight card kicked off with a women’s bout featuring two fighters from overseas.

Spain’s Victoria Albons Llompart defeated Jamillette Valverde of Nicaragua by fourth-round TKO.

It was an entertaining battle. A cut opened on Valverde’s forehead in round two, and by round three the blood was affecting her as she became more defensive.

The fight was stopped in round four after the referee consulted with the doctor.

Furqan Cheema def Patryk Fornalski-Split Decision

It looked like it was over.

Patryk Fornalski connected with a big overhand right that dropped Furqan Cheema early in round one.

Fornalski kept up his assault, knocking Cheema down again. You got the feeling it would be an early night for Fornalski.

But Cheema regrouped and took control of the fight. In the fifth round, he returned the favour, knocking down the tiring Fornalski to cement the victory.

The judges scored the bout 47-46 (twice) and 46-47 for Fornalski.

It was Cheema’s first bare knuckle fight after 5 MMA bouts.

Omari Grant DRAW Marshall Furey

Grant faced Furey in a battle of debuting light heavyweights.

The Judges couldn’t separate them, with scores of 38-38.

Jordan Ward def. Patrick Nash-TKO Round 2

Ward improved to 2-1 (1-1 BKB) with a stoppage win over Nash (2-4-1).

Ward knocked Nash down with a right uppercut in the second. Nash had a nasty hematoma on his forehead.

To make things worse for Nash, he injured his right hand after landing a shot on Ward.

The doctor checked out Nash’s face swelling after the second round and the fight was stopped.
