BKFC Middleweight Champion Dave “The Redneck” Mundell has stepped in on short notice to face Lorenzo Hunt at Knucklemania VI on 7 February in Philadelphia.
Mundell replaces UFC veteran Yoel Romero, who withdrew from the fight because of illness.
Mundell was scheduled to face Josh Dyer last November but withdrew and was replaced by Hunt. Hunt knocked out Dyer to win the BKFC Light Heavyweight Title for the second time.
Even though Hunt (12-2, 10 KOs) and Mundell (10-1, 7 KOs) hold the BKFC light heavy and middleweight belts, neither title will be on the line at Knucklemania VI.Hunt was scheduled to face Romero in a catchweight bout.
The fight was announced on today’s The Bare Knuckle Show and host Brian Soscia spoke with both fighters.
“I don’t know exactly what happened with Yoel but I’m f****ng ready,” Mundell said.
“I live in the gym. I train year-round,” said Mundell, when asked about facing Hunt with less than two weeks notice.
“This is my passion. This is my love. I’m obsessed with this sport.”
“What better stage than Knucklemania to show and remind people why I’m number one,” he said. Mundell said he plans to knock out Hunt, who was knocked down twice against Dyer and also hit the canvas against Mike Richman at Knucklemania III.
Hunt joined the broadcast and asked Mundell “You bit off more than you could chew this time, didn’t you?”
“Dave, I’ve known you since 2012. When I came to your gym, you wouldn’t even spar with me,” said Hunt.
“You ain’t changed. Still a coward. Bro, you’re going to the hospital,” he said.
BKFC President David Feldman said the Mundell-Hunt fight matches BKFC’s two top fighters.
“Now, we have the number one and number two pound-for-pound BKFC fighters fighting each other. You don’t ever see that,” said Feldman.
Yoel Romero “I Was Feeling Very Weak”
Romero released a statement explaining his withdrawal, mentioning he looks forward to returning to action in BKFC.
