BKB 59 Main Card Results: Fernandez Survives Scare, Defeats Podmore

Julian Fernandez was knocked down early but recovered to stop Daniel Podmore in a thrilling battle Saturday in Tijuana. The super cruiserweight world title fight headlined BKB 59 at the Tijuana Municipal Auditorium.

The bigger Fernandez came forward from the opening bell behind the jab. Podmore connected with a beautiful counter left hook that dropped and dazed the hometown Tijuana fighter.

Fernandez (4-0) was hurt but quickly recovered and continued his attack. He dropped a wilting Podmore (9-5) late in round one with right hands to the body.

In round two, Podmore grabbed and continued throwing the counter hook, trying to weather the storm. A series of Fernandez rights flattened Podmore who was unable to beat the referee’s count.

The lively Mexican crowd stood and cheered as the referee counted Podmore out. It was the unbeaten Fernandez’s first title defence after winning the belt against the UK’s Alex Wilson in March.

“I completed two dreams this year. To win the world title and retain it in my home of birth Tijuana,” Fernandez said, speaking through interviewer and interpreter Gareth A Davies.

“I was knocked down for the first time in my career and had to recover,” said Fernandez, when asked about the early knockdown.

“I had to come back in the second round. You know what? I learned from it,” he said.

Davies asked him about facing Marko Martinjak or Gustavo Trujillo, BKB’s bridgerweight and heavyweight champions, who are widely regarded as two of the sport’s best fighters.

“I am going to go for more titles,” said Fernandez.

Cecilia Ulloa Defeats Andy Nguyen for BKB Super Flyweight Championship

In the BKB 59 co-feature, Mexico’s Cecilia Ulloa (3-2) won the previously vacant super flyweight title by third-round stoppage over Andy Nguyen (3-3).

Nguyen jabbed and moved, switching between orthodox and southpaw in round one. “The Crasian” landed a couple of good counter shots late in the stanza. The two women traded punches in the round’s final seconds, drawing loud cheers from the crowd.

Ulloa kept a high guard and remained patient in round two, stepping in occasionally with combinations. There wasn’t much to separate the two women. But Nguyen was spending more energy and Ulloa seemed the stronger fighter.

Ulloa seized control in round three. She unloaded with Nguyen in a Trigon corner, unleashing an avalanche of punches as Nguyen covered up. A distressed Nguyen, noticeably swelling near the left eye, put her head on the ropes when the round ended.

Nguyen may have taken a knuckle in the eye. The fight was stopped between rounds in her corner due to vision problems.

Ulloa, wearing the Mexican tri-colors, climbed on the Trigon turnbuckle to celebrate her title victory in her native Mexico. It was a sudden ending to a fight that looked like it was heading to the later rounds.

“It’s really an amazing moment for me. The commitments and sacrifices I’ve made. And I’ve had really hard opponents,” Ulloa told Davies, when asked how it felt to be Mexico’s first female bare knuckle champion.

During the postfight interview, Ulloa faced off with BKFC Straweeight Champion Britain Hart.

“You’re nothing about the best in the world. But one day you might,” Hart told her as the two went forehead to forehead.

“I’ll happily fight you in the next event in Mexico,” Ulloa replied.

Hart is a personal friend of Nguyen’s and accompanied her to the arena and has even cornered her in the past. Will Hart cross over to BKB to face Ulloa and try to avenge her friend’s defeat?

BKB 59 Main Card: Other Results

In other BKB 59 main card action, the super middleweight bout between Romario Ovalle and Marco Chino Villa was ruled a no contest because of an unintentional headbutt in the third round.

Pablo Anguiano (1-0) made quick work of Ricardo Rueda, stopping him in the first minute of a cruiserweight matchup. The 26-year-old Anguiano is 6-1 as a pro boxer.

Adrian Gonzalez (1-0) scored two knockdowns en route to a first-round stoppage against Javier Valverde (0-1) in a lightweight contest.

Felipe Huerta defeated Erick Eduardo Soria by TKO in a lightweight contest.

In the heavyweight opener, Jonathan Duran defeated Kevin Sanchez by second-round TkO. Both men made their bare knuckle debuts.

After the BKB 59 main card, additional bouts took place that streamed exclusively on TikTok.
