Former BKB world champion Daniel “Big Pod” Podmore will look to win another world title against Julian Fernandez on 19 September in Tijuana, Mexico. The BKB Cruiserweight World Title bout headlines BKB 59 at the Tijuana Municipal Auditorium.
The 38-year-old Podmore has held BKB belts at super cruiserweight and heavyweight in a bare knuckle career that’s spanned nearly a decade. He looks to win another world title on enemy soil as he takes on Mexican powerpuncher Fernandez.
Podmore, official record listed at 9-4 (8 KOs) by Boxrec, earned another title fight by defeating fellow former world champion Jarome Hatch by stoppage in Cardiff in June. Fighting out of the respected Connelly Gym in Birmingham, the veteran has won 4 of his last 5 bouts. His only loss was by stoppage to the highly regarded Marko Martinjak.
Fernandez (3-0, 3 KOs) is making the first defence of the belt he won by knocking out Alex Wilson in March. The 33-year-old pro boxing veteran hasnt’ been past the second round yet in fights without gloves. But he faces the biggest challenge of his career in the more experienced Podmore.
Cecy Ulloa Faces Andy Nguyen for Women’s Title
Another world title is on the line in the BKB 59 co-main event. Mexico’s Cecy Ulloa faces Andy Nguyen of the United States for the currently vacant BKB Women’s Super Flyweight World Championship.
Ulloa (2-2, 1 KO) has won two in a row after decision losses to Bec Rawlings and Shelby Cannon in her first two bare knuckle bouts. Nguyen (3-2) snapped a two-fight losing streak with a win over Cristina Crist in January. The popular Nguyen, nicknamed “The Crasian”, has competed in MMA, bare knuckle MMA, Muay Thai and bare knuckle fighting during her professional career.
BKB Bare Knuckle Boxing Partners with Zanfer Boxing
BKB is partnering with Zanfer Boxing, one of Mexico’s top boxing promoters, for the event. Zanfer Boxing has promoted many top Mexican fighters over the years.
It’s the first BKB event in Mexico, and comes just a couple of months after the promotion debuted in California before a sold out crowd in Los Angeles. It’s a time of growth for BKB.
