BYB 35 Albuquerque Brawl: Results and Highlights

BYB debuted in the fighting city of Albuquerque, New Mexico, USA Saturday.

It was a hard-hitting fight card with plenty of action. The judges had an easy night, with only one bout going the distance.

Here are results.

Giovanni Rosales def. Nick Whitmore-TKO Round 1

In the super middleweight opener, Giovanni Rosales overwhelmed Nick Whitmore. The two debutants traded bombs early, with Rosales taking control late in round one. He opened up on Whitmore in a corner, with the referee stepping in to rescue the bloodied hometown fighter at the 1:48 mark.

Michael Chaise Nelson def. Nate Williams-Unanimous Decision

The boxer beat the MMA fighter. In a battle between combat sports veterans, Michael Chaise Nelson outpoined Nate Williams over five rounds. Judges’ scores for the super featherweight bout were 49-44 (twice) and 48-45, all for Nelson.

Nelson stayed at distance, looking to catch the shorter Williams coming forward. He scored well with left hooks.

Williams went down from a right in round one, and a hook in round two. Nelson’s right hand bled and the doctor checked it before round three.

Williams was game and tried to turn the fight around with big uppercuts. Nelson got cut near the right eye in the later rounds.

Nelson told BYB’s Danielle Moinet that he broke both hands during the fight.

“Both my hands are smoked. I tried to give you guys the best I could do. He’s tough. Respect to him. He’s a true warrior,” Nelson said.

Nelson is a veteran of over 20 professional boxing bouts. Williams meanwhile has competed in professional MMA over 50 times. Both men made their bare knuckle debuts.

Yunieski Gonzalez def. Martez McGregor-KO Round 1

Former boxing contender Yunieski Gonzalez had too much artillery for Martez McGregor, prevailing by first-round stoppage.

McGregor was willing but Gonzalez too powerful. The Cuban worked the uppercut in the clinch early, and focused on the body later in the round. McGregor went down twice, and was counted out at the 2:52 mark of round one of the cruiserweight contest.

It wasn’t all easy for Gonzalez-he was cut over the right eye by a McGregor left. Gonzalez told BYB’s Claudio Trejos he’s ready for a title shot after the match.

Henry Barahona def. Matthew Maestas-KO Round 1

Local lad Henry Barahona thrilled the hometown crowd, making short work of Matthew Maestas (1-2).

The middleweights started dirty boxing after the opening bell. Barahona mixed uppercuts and body shots.

It was a shot downstairs that crumpled Maestas to the canvas on his belly. Official time was 53 seconds.

Jarome Hatch SHOCKS Dan Lerwell in 13 Seconds!

Jarome Hatch rejuvenated his career with a stunning 13-second knockout of former BKB champ Dan Lerwell.

Hatch exploded from scratch. He dipped and threw a massive overhand right, connecting with Lerwell’s chin. The Swansea fighter crashed on his back, before valiantly trying to rise.

The stunning knockout snapped a three-bout losing streak for the heavy-hitting Hatch, 4-3 (4 KOs). All his wins are by first-round stoppage.

“It feels good to get back in the win column,” Hatch told Moinet.

Hatch told Moinet his motivation has been rekindled since he started coaching. Lerwell slips to 9-4-he’s 0-2 in BYB in the US. He previously lost to Cub Hawkins.

Guerra Returns With KO Win

BYB veteran Carlos Guerra successfully returned to the promotion after a 15-month sabbatical.

The Mexican warrior stopped debuting Cole Griego in three rounds. Guerra, who debuted for the company all the way back at BYB 5, improves to 6-2 with 6 KOs.

Cody East def. Dylan Rush-TKO Round 3

In a battle of unbeaten heavyweight prospects, Cody East (2-0) got the better of Dylan Rush (1-1).

The fight has been described as a “bloodbath”, and was voted the BYB 35 Fight of the Night. Rush was unable to continue after the third round.

Javon Wright Captures World Title

The main event pitted Javon “Wolfman” Wright of the USA against Argentina’s Walter Saravia. The match was for the vacant BYB Police Gazette Welterweight Title.

Wright claimed the title in emphatic fashion, finishing Saravia off with a left in the first round.
