Karl Thompson defeated Rob Boardman in a knockdown-filled brawl to become the BKFC UK Cruiserweight Champion. The battle between unbeatens headlined BKFC Fight Night Newcastle Saturday at the Walker Activity Centre and streamed on DAZN.
The fighters got off to a quick start.A Boardman left hook dropped Thompson to a knee. Another Boardman left wobbled Thompson but he remained upright.
Thompson grabbed and clinched to clear his head as the battle continued. He stunned Boardman with a right-left combo, and landed more clean shots before dropping Boardman with a left.
An unsteady Boardman arose, breathing heavily. Thompson continued his onslaught and the referee wisely intervened with Boardman doubled over on the ropes. The official stoppage time is 1 minute 46 seconds of round one.
“I know Rob’s obviously got a good boxing background. I knew I’d have to work my way in. I knew I was gonna get caught with shots, that’s the game we in. I trained very hard for this. I know how fit I am. I knew I could step it up,” Thompson said after the fight.
Thompson thanked his wife, coach, and sponsors after the win. “The Wasp” improves to 4-0 in bare knuckle, all wins by knockout. Boardman is now 6-1.
Pic Jardine Wins Unanimous Decision Against Tony Shields
In the BKFC Newcastle Fight Night co-main event, Pic Jardine improved to 2-0 with a unanimous decision over Tony Shields (3-1). The judges scored the match 50-45 and 49-46 twice for Jardine, who landed the harder punches in a hard-fought, competitive battle.
